Questions and answers
100 straight answers to the questions small business owners ask before, during and after a website project.
Cost and payment
How much will my website cost?
Small sites cost $700 to $1,200 CAD.
Why do prices vary so much between agencies, freelancers and DIY builders?
Two reasons: overhead and scope. DIY builders are cheap because you do the work yourself. Agencies pay for offices, sales staff and account managers, and that cost is in their price. We're a remote team, so you pay for the work, not the overhead, at the same quality standard. Scope also changes the price: number of pages, who writes the copy, features like booking or a store, and how custom the design is.
What's included in the price, and what costs extra?
Included: up to 5 pages, mobile-first design, copy editing, a contact or quote form, and basic SEO setup (page titles, schema, Google Search Console and Bing). Extra: copywriting, online booking, an online store, a French version and extra pages.
Is it a fixed price or hourly?
Fixed price for an agreed, written scope. Anything added later is quoted separately, and approved by you, before we do it.
Are there ongoing costs after launch?
Yes, small ones. Basic hosting starts at $15 a month. Edits under 15 minutes are free for hosting clients; bigger changes are quoted first. The domain is about $20 a year and is registered in your name.
How much are the domain, hosting, email and SSL?
Domain: about $20 a year, at cost, in your name. Hosting: from $15 a month. SSL: free, included with hosting. Business email: through Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, about $8 to $10 per user per month, paid directly to them.
Do I pay up front? What's the payment schedule?
50% up front and 50% after the site goes live. Ongoing services can be billed monthly, or paid in advance for up to two years.
Do you offer payment plans or financing?
No. Our projects are small enough that 50% up front and 50% at launch works for most businesses.
What happens if the project goes over budget?
We absorb it. A fixed price means any overrun on the agreed scope is our cost, not yours. The price only changes if you ask for something new, and we quote that and get your approval first.
Do you charge for changes or revisions?
Two rounds of design revisions are included. Further rounds, or new features, are quoted separately.
Is there a contract? Can I cancel?
Yes, a short written agreement for each project. You can cancel at any time: you pay for the work done so far and you keep it. Monthly services can be cancelled with 30 days' notice.
Are prices in Canadian dollars?
Yes. All our prices are in Canadian dollars.
Why are you cheaper (or more expensive) than the other quote I got?
We're a remote team, so we have no office and no account managers, and you talk directly to the people building your site. The work is the same standard. To compare quotes like for like, check whether each one gives a fixed price, registers the domain in your name, includes speed testing and includes SEO setup.
Timeline
How long will it take to build?
A small site of up to 5 pages takes 1 to 2 weeks once your content is ready.
What could delay it?
The usual causes: waiting for your text, photos or feedback; waiting for access to your domain, old hosting or booking system; and new requests added partway through. We send a content checklist on day one and agree review dates up front to keep things moving.
Can you do it faster if I'm in a hurry?
Yes. If your content is ready, we can launch in 3 to 5 working days for a rush fee of about 25%.
When do I need to give you content and photos?
Within the first few days, before the build starts. The 1 to 2 week timeline starts once your content is in. We can start on the design while you gather it.
When can I see a first design?
Within a week of the kick-off call.
Process and working together
What does the process look like, step by step?
1) A 30-minute discovery call. 2) A plan with a fixed quote. 3) Design: your first design within a week. 4) Build and content: you approve every fact. 5) Launch: we set up redirects, submit the site to Google and Bing, and do a check-in after 30 days.
What do you need from me?
Your logo; photos of your work, team and premises; your text, or answers to our questions so we can write it; your domain login; about an hour of your time for the call and reviews; and your approval of every fact before launch.
How much of my time will this take?
About 2 to 3 hours in total: a 30-minute call, about an hour gathering content, and two short reviews of around 30 minutes each.
Who will I actually be working with?
The founder, Harshil, directly. Harshil plans and oversees every project; designers and developers on the team do the build.
How do we communicate?
Video calls for the kick-off and reviews, email for decisions, and a shared project page where you can follow progress and comment on designs.
What are your working hours? How fast do you reply?
Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm Eastern time (7 am to 3 pm Mountain, 6 am to 2 pm Pacific). We reply within one working day.
Can I see progress before it goes live?
Yes, at the review points: the design review, and a full preview before launch.
How many rounds of design changes do I get?
Two rounds of design changes are included. Any extra rounds are quoted before we do them.
What if I don't like the design?
We'll try a new direction within your two revision rounds. If it's still not right, you can stop the project. You've paid the deposit for the work done, and you owe nothing more.
You're remote. How does that work? Will you understand my customers?
Yes. We work remotely from India, during Eastern business hours. We research how customers search in your city, write in Canadian English and use Canadian sources. You approve every fact before anything goes live.
Design and content
Can I see examples of sites you've built?
Demo sites for trades, clinics and law firms are coming soon, clearly labelled as demos.
Have you worked with businesses in my industry?
Not yet as a paying client. But we focus on trades, clinics and professional firms, and we research your industry's rules and how its customers search before we start.
Will my website be custom or a template?
Custom-designed for your business, built on our own tested starter theme on perfectCMS. That's what keeps it fast and affordable, and it's not a generic template.
Will it work on phones and tablets?
Yes. It's designed for phones first, then tested on real phone sizes and with Google's PageSpeed and Core Web Vitals tools before launch.
Who writes the text? Can you write it for me?
Either. You can write it and we'll edit it for search at no extra cost, or we write it after our call for an extra fee of about $50 to $100 per page. You approve every page.
Do I need professional photos? Can you use stock photos?
Your own photos are best, and good phone photos are fine; they build more trust than stock. We'll send a shot list. Where it makes sense, for example backgrounds, we use licensed stock.
Can you use my existing logo and branding? Can you design a logo?
Yes, we'll use your existing logo and colours. We don't design logos.
How many pages do I need?
Most businesses start with 5: home, services, about, contact and one more. To rank on Google, add a page for each main service and for each area you actually serve.
Can you copy a site I like?
Show us sites you like, and we'll bring the ideas (layout, feel) into an original design. We don't copy another site's design, text or images.
Will it be accessible for people with disabilities?
Yes. WCAG 2.1 AA basics are built in: readable contrast, keyboard navigation, alt text and labelled forms. Ontario's AODA website rules apply to private organizations with 50 or more employees. A fuller accessibility audit is available for an extra fee.
Can the site be in French or other languages?
Yes, for a flat fee per page (about $50 per page for French). Other languages are available on request.
Features
Can customers book appointments online?
Yes. We can connect the booking tool you already use (Jane, Calendly, Square, Cal.com and others), or build a booking system for you.
Can I sell products online? What about payments and shipping?
Yes. We build online stores on Shopify, which handles payments, Canadian sales tax and shipping. You pay Shopify's monthly fee directly.
Can it have a quote form or contact form? Where do submissions go?
Yes, a contact or quote form is included. Submissions go to your email and are also saved in your site dashboard. Spam protection is included.
Can people upload photos with their enquiry?
Yes, at no extra cost. Quote forms can accept photos, which is especially useful for trades.
Can you connect it to my booking software, CRM or email marketing?
Yes. One integration is included free, for example Mailchimp, HubSpot, Jobber, Housecall Pro or Google Sheets.
Can I have a blog?
Yes. Setting up the blog is included and you can post yourself. We can also write articles for you for a fee.
Can you add a chat widget?
Yes, free, with the tool of your choice: WhatsApp, Messenger, Tawk.to or similar. Chat widgets can slow a page down, so we load them in a way that keeps the site fast.
Can you show my Google reviews on the site?
Yes, we can display your genuine Google reviews. If we see a problem, for example your professional college restricts testimonials, we'll advise you not to.
Can it have a members' area or client portal?
Yes. It's a bigger build, so we quote it separately after a call.
Ownership and control
Do I own the website, domain and content?
You own your domain and all your content: text, photos and logo. The perfectCMS platform the site runs on is licensed to you while you host with us.
Whose name is the domain registered in?
Yours. It's registered in your name and your account; we only get access to manage the DNS.
Can I update the site myself? Is it easy?
Yes. You get a perfectCMS editor login, so you can change text, photos, hours and prices, and add posts, without touching code.
Will you train me to use it?
Yes. You get a short recorded video walkthrough of your own site, plus a 30-minute live session at launch.
What platform do you build on? Why?
perfectCMS, our own platform, which is built for speed and for search and AI-answer structure. Online stores are built on Shopify.
What happens if I want to leave you or move to another company?
You keep your domain. You also get a full export of your content and images, plus a static HTML copy of the site that you can host anywhere. We ask for 30 days' notice.
Will I have access to the hosting and admin accounts?
You get full admin access to your site's editor and to your domain. We manage the hosting servers.
SEO and getting found
Will my website show up on Google?
Yes. Every site has the SEO basics built in and is submitted to Google and Bing, so it will be indexed. Ranking high for competitive searches takes ongoing SEO and time.
How long until I rank?
An established local business usually sees first movement in 2 to 4 months. A brand-new website needs 6 months or more for competitive searches. Specific, long-tail searches can rank sooner.
Can you guarantee first page or number one?
No. Google controls rankings, so nobody can honestly guarantee them. We commit to doing the work, and we report on what matters: calls and enquiries.
Is SEO included, or is it extra?
The SEO basics are included in every build: page titles, structure, schema, speed, and submission to Google and Bing. Ongoing SEO is a separate monthly service.
What does ongoing local SEO cost?
Three monthly plans. Starter, $199: Google Business Profile management, consistent business details, review requests, Search Console monitoring and a monthly report. Growth, $399: everything in Starter plus a new page or guide each month, AI search optimization and call tracking. Competitive, $699: everything in Growth plus two new pages or guides a month, mentions on trusted sites, competitor tracking and a quarterly review call.
What's the difference between a website and SEO?
Your website is your shop. SEO is the signposts and the reputation that bring people to it. We build every site ready for SEO, and ongoing SEO keeps building your visibility.
What is local SEO? Do I need it?
Local SEO gets your business into Google's map and local results when people nearby search, for example "plumber near me". You need it if you serve customers in a specific area.
What's a Google Business Profile? Do I need one?
It's your free listing on Google Maps and Search, with your hours, reviews, photos and a call button. It's essential for local businesses. We can set it up or fix an existing one. It needs a real address or a real service area.
Will I lose my current Google rankings if I redesign?
Not if it's done right. Before changing anything, we record which pages bring you visitors. We keep or redirect every URL (301 redirects) and watch Search Console after launch. A small, temporary dip can happen.
Do I need a blog to rank?
No. Service pages, your Google Business Profile and reviews matter more. A few genuinely useful guides help later.
How do I get more reviews?
Ask at the right moment. Right after a job or visit, send a short text with a direct link to your Google review page, and reply to every review you get. Don't offer incentives, and don't filter out unhappy customers; Google prohibits both.
Can you get my business recommended by ChatGPT or other AI assistants?
We can improve your chances, but nobody can guarantee it. We make your business easy for assistants to find and trust: pages that answer first, consistent facts everywhere, access for AI crawlers, and mentions on trusted sites. Then we track the results every month.
What does AI search optimization cost?
It's included in the Growth ($399) and Competitive ($699) SEO plans. It isn't sold on its own.
Should I do Google Ads instead of SEO?
They do different jobs. Ads bring calls right away but stop the moment you stop paying. SEO takes months but keeps working. Many businesses run ads while SEO builds up. We build the landing pages for ads.
Results and leads
Will this bring me more customers or calls?
That's the goal. Everything we build is designed to turn visitors into calls and enquiries, and we track them. Results depend on your market, your competition and your reviews, so we don't promise specific numbers.
How will I know if the website is working?
At launch we set up Google Search Console and privacy-friendly analytics, and we track form enquiries and phone clicks. You can check them any time.
Do you provide reports? What's in them?
Yes. SEO clients get a one-page monthly report in plain language: calls, enquiries, visits from search, rankings for your key searches, what we did this month and what's next. Growth and Competitive reports also show AI assistant mentions.
Can you track calls and form enquiries?
Yes. Form enquiries are tracked on every site, and full call tracking with tracking phone numbers is included in the Growth and Competitive SEO plans.
What results have you got for other clients?
We're new, so we don't have client results to share yet. Our demo sites, coming soon, will show the speed and quality you'd get.
What happens if it doesn't bring in leads?
We find out what isn't working (traffic, your offer, a page, reviews) and fix it. SEO is month to month, so you can stop if you're not seeing value.
Technical, hosting and security
Where is the site hosted? Is it in Canada?
Yes, on servers in a Canadian data centre.
Is it secure? Do I get SSL (the padlock)?
Yes. Every site gets a free SSL certificate (the padlock).
What if the site gets hacked or goes down?
Uptime monitoring alerts us automatically. We restore the site from backup, usually within hours, at no charge for hosting clients.
Do you back it up? How often?
Yes. Weekly automatic backups, kept for 4 weeks.
How fast will the site load?
Fast. We test with Google PageSpeed before launch and aim to pass Core Web Vitals on mobile. Pages typically load in about 2 seconds.
Can you set up my business email?
No, we don't set up email. We'll point you to a step-by-step guide for Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, and we'll make sure your domain settings work with it.
Can you transfer my existing domain?
You don't need to transfer it. Your domain stays where it is, and we update the DNS to point it at your new site. We don't handle domain transfers.
What happens to my old website?
We copy over the content you want to keep and redirect your old pages to the new ones. Once the new site is live, you can cancel your old hosting.
After launch: support and maintenance
What support do I get after launch?
30 days of free bug fixes and small tweaks after launch. After that, if anything we built breaks, we fix it free for hosting clients.
Who fixes things if something breaks?
We do. Email us and we'll reply within one working day. Urgent outages are handled faster.
Do I need a maintenance plan? What does it include?
No separate plan is needed. Hosting at $15 a month covers SSL, updates, weekly backups and monitoring. Edits under 15 minutes are free; bigger changes are quoted first.
How much do small changes cost later?
Tiny edits that take under 15 minutes are free for hosting clients. Bigger changes are quoted before we do them.
How often should a website be updated or redesigned?
A full refresh about every 3 years. In between, keep your prices, services, photos and hours up to date.
Can you add pages or features later?
Yes, any time. New pages are about $100 to $150 each, and new features are quoted separately.
Legal and compliance
Do I need a privacy policy? Can you write one?
Yes. If you collect any personal information (contact forms, analytics), you need one under Canadian privacy law (PIPEDA). We'll generate one with a privacy policy tool for you to review.
Do I need a cookie consent banner?
We add one to every site to be safe. Canada has no blanket cookie-banner law like the EU's, but consent rules apply to tracking, and Quebec's Law 25 requires consent for tracking technologies.
Is my contact form compliant with privacy law (PIPEDA)?
It's built with privacy law in mind. Forms collect only what's needed, say how the data will be used, link to your privacy policy and submit over encrypted HTTPS. Health information shouldn't be sent through a general contact form.
What can I legally say on my site in my industry?
We write within the common rules: no fake testimonials, no "specialist" unless you're certified, and no guaranteed outcomes. We flag anything you should check, and you confirm it with your regulator, such as your health college or law society. We're not lawyers.
Do I need French on my website if I serve Quebec?
Most likely yes. Under the Charter of the French Language, businesses operating in Quebec generally need French on their commercial websites. Confirm with an advisor; we can build the French version.
Who owns the copyright to the photos and text?
You do. You own your own photos, and you own any text we write for you once it's paid for. Stock photos are licensed for use on your site only.
Trust
Are you a real business? Where are you based?
Yes. Dev Alliance is run by Harshil and works remotely from India with Canadian clients. Registration details are available on request.
How long have you been doing this?
Dev Alliance is a new business. Our founder, Harshil, builds software and websites and built perfectCMS, the platform our sites run on.
Can I speak to a past client?
Not yet, because we're new. In the meantime you can look at our demo sites when they launch, and keep your risk low with 50/50 payment.
What if you disappear halfway through?
Your risk is low. You only pay 50% up front, the domain is always in your name, you see progress at each review point, and you get your content back if anything goes wrong. And if we fail to deliver, we refund your deposit.
Why should I choose you over a local agency or my nephew who "does websites"?
We cost less than an agency and offer more accountability than a favour: a fixed price, a written scope, SEO and AI-search structure built in, tracking, ongoing support, and your domain in your name. And we specialize in Canadian trades, clinics and professional firms.
